Chapter 2 Should I Tell Him I'm Pregnant?

Samuel decided bringing up divorce now would be too harsh. He'd save that bomb for later.

Heading out the door, he said coldly, "Come down for dinner. Don't keep me waiting."

Eliana watched him leave, her heart sinking. 'What's his deal? He's never been like this before.'

She couldn't shake this weird feeling that something bad was coming, like everything was about to fall apart.

The last thing she wanted was to go downstairs and risk seeing that woman again in her house, so she just flopped back on the bed.

Meanwhile, Samuel sat alone at the dining table downstairs.

After waiting a while with no sign of his young wife, his face hard as granite, he barked at the housekeeper, "Nora, go get her. Tell her it's now or never for dinner."

Nora hustled upstairs to find Eliana.

Seeing her sprawled on the bed, Nora said gently, "Mrs. Nelson, your husband wants you downstairs for dinner. Better hurry before he loses it."

That just made Eliana madder. She sat up and shot Nora a look.

"Why's he the one getting mad? I'm the one who should be upset. I'm not sitting down to eat with some other woman."

She knew in her gut this woman wasn't just some random friend. Who knows what went down in that study? And now Samuel—her husband—was giving her the cold shoulder and getting mad at her?

No way in hell.

Nora lowered her voice, "That lady's gone now. It's just Mr. Nelson downstairs. Go keep him company." She gave Eliana a pleading look, "You missed him like crazy when he was away, so why pick a fight now that he's back?"

Nora thought to herself, their young Mrs. Nelson could be such a kid sometimes.

Lucky for her, Mr. Nelson usually had the patience of a saint and spoiled her rotten. She might not have gotten away with half this stuff with another man.

"She left?" Eliana perked up. "For real? Samuel didn't ask her to stay?" She paused, then pressed, "Nora, what's their deal? Why'd he bring her here?"

Nora shook her head. "I don't know much about what's between them, but Mr. Nelson's a stand-up guy. I don't think he'd cheat on you." Then added, "If you want answers, you should ask him yourself."

As the help, Nora knew better than to get mixed up in her boss's personal life.

Eliana took a deep breath, deciding to get to the bottom of this with Samuel.

After Nora left, she quickly hid the pregnancy test and headed downstairs.

She slipped into the dining room quietly and sat across from her husband, sneaking peeks at him.

When he ignored her, she took it out on her beef tenderloin, attacking it with her knife and fork.

Her pretty pixie face scrunched up in a pout.

Samuel put down his silverware and looked at her. Seeing his young wife pouting, he reached over and gave her cheek a gentle pinch. "Come on, don't play with your food. Eat up."

Eliana pushed his hand away. "Something's different, Samuel. Ever since you got back, you've been acting strange. Why can't you just tell me what's going on?"

She looked at him with trusting eyes.

Samuel gazed back. Sometimes he thought she looked like a painting come to life, too perfect to be real.

So petite and graceful, with her signature sweet perfume.

But no matter how lovely she was, he knew they couldn't stay together.

"Nothing's wrong," he said flatly. "Just eat." He sat up straight and focused on his plate, avoiding her gaze.

Eliana watched him. Everything about him was precise and polished, naturally charming.

She adored him so much that one kind word made her forget all about the mystery woman. She quickly went back to eating.

Samuel quietly stood up and came around to her side. He took her utensils and carefully selected some food to feed her. "Take it easy, Eliana," he said softly.

Eliana looked up at him, eyes sparkling. Just hearing him say her name made her heart melt.

After dinner, they spent time together in the living room while Nora cleaned up.
